The Lost Army - Margery Lawrence

Singing and shouting they swept to the treacherous forest
Darkness and silence received them and smother their pain
Darkness and silence and night is the end of their story-
                                    They came not again!

Never a hero came forth of the legions that entered
Never a cry nor a prayer, nor a song of the brave
Dark and in silence the sinister force received them
                                    And made them a grave!

Somewhere deep down in the heat of the wood that betrayed them
Shoulder to shoulder they lie, with their wounds to the fore
There in the dark and the silence they sleep, the Lost Army
                                    Returning no more.

We may not hear of their valour, their death or their glory
Nay! They were ours – and they died for their country, and so
Darkness and silence and night is the end of their story -
                                    All we need to know.

Margery Lawrence
