The broken soldier sings and whistles day to dark;
He's but the remnant of a man, maimed and half-blind,
But the soul they could not harm goes singing like the lark,

The soul in the broken man is beautiful and brave;

The poem portrays hope despite the war as it suggests that although the man is physically broken, his soul ‘they could not harm’ and instead remains ‘beautiful’. We can see this hope through the several similes used which compare the man to nature. For example, he is thought of as ‘like Robin on the grass’ who is ‘brave’, as well as ‘singing like a linnet on wings’ and a ‘bird set free’. This creates the image of a joyful and happy man trying his best to remain upbeat despite being ‘maimed and half-blind’. The poem could therefore be compared to that of ‘Over the top’ by Sybil Bristowe, as in that poem the man also tries his best to remain hopeful by thinking of ‘bibles’, ‘prayers’ and ‘golden stairs’, in preparation to go over the top and fight.

This poem could convey that although the man in question has been broken and is unable to go back to war because it has left him physically and permanently harmed "maimed and half-blind" he still has a positive outlook on life "sings and whistles day to dark". The fact that the soldier "sings and whistles" could portray that he is trying to distract himself from the things that he can no longer do which he could once before, helping himself remain with a positive outlook on life. "the gay soul singing like a bird set free" could imply the horrors of war and the desperation that the men have to escape from the whole bloody affair maybe because they were uneducated on just how awful it would be; this is much like `education` in which Barrington expresses her frustration at civilians oblivion to what was happening to their men "For Christ's sake think!"
