In this poem it is mentioned that no one views the VAD nurses as 'more than common white and blue' which could convey how in the time of the war, nobody looked past the uniforms and simply viewed the nurses as help for the injured soldiers who were fighting for their country. Also in the last line of the poem Vickridge made of use juxtapostion when describing the 'humble Grail'; these words contradict each other as by saying the pantry was humble could convey that it wasn't very important, however by proceeding to add on the word 'Grail', one could then assert that the pantry was in fact very important and a sought-after place.
ReplyDeleteI feel the poem also uses the technique of alliteration and assonance repetitively starting with 'pots in piles' to 'curls and clatter'.
DeleteI agree with you, that people may of been dictated by their uniform as officers would wear the best compared to their soldiers in hierachy.
The effect for the use of juxtaposition could be that the writer is confused or split between if she finds war a comfort, and if 'humble'is the right word, as war is commonly meant to create peace or announce what needs to be changed.
